What exactly is the P1 port?

The Dutch smart meter has several ports, each with its own task. The P1 port is the one meant for you: a telephone plug connection of the RJ12 type, on the front or underside of the meter. You connect your own read-out device to it, often an energy consumption manager or a small dongle. The port sends a short message with the current meter readings at brief intervals. The meter also has a separate port for the grid operator, which uses it to collect the readings remotely. These two are independent. What you do through the P1 port does not affect the grid operator's measurement.

Which data do you read out?

Through the P1 port you receive the data the smart meter measures itself. For electricity these are the meter readings in kilowatt-hours, split into consumption and feed-in, plus the instantaneous power in kilowatts at that moment. If a gas meter is linked to the smart meter, your gas usage comes along too. Because the port passes these values on almost in real time, you see the effect almost immediately when you switch something on or off. That is exactly the insight the ordinary settlement is too coarse and too late for. You work with your own data, on your own connection.
